Play every day is a key component of the ReFocus philosophy. Simply, recreation is therapy for all of us.For adults with developmental disabilities, research shows that recreational activities have positive physical and cognitive benefits. They improve motor skills, agility and balance; reduce depression, anxiety and negative thinking; and improve social and communication skills, which for some of our clients increases opportunities for employment and independent living.

In addition to daily recreational activities at our Community Centers and group homes, ReFocus offers a variety of special events throughout the year – all based on an individual's interests and abilities.

Special Olympics

Each year, ReFocus athletes compete in Special Olympics-Rhode Island. With uniforms from a generous donor, the folks take to the field at Bryant University in Spring and at URI in Summer, a much anticipated opportunity to enjoy active participation in sports, as well as an opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills, build confidence, and discover their independence. Special Olympics is truly a celebration of diversity and inclusion.

Culture Days

Each month, the staff and folks at our two Community Centers come together for a Culture Day Party! The day includes activities based on that month's culture as well as a feast of that month's cultural fare. ReFocus prides itself on its diversity, and among the many blessings diversity brings is its culinary variety for the palate. Staff from countries around the world share traditional tasty treats from their culture with other staff and with the folks we support.  Music and dancing add to the festivities of the day. It is also an extraordinary learning experience for all who come and share in these days. Recent celebrations have included a Chinese New Year party, Black History month, Irish Culture on St. Patrick's Day and many more! Check out the Community Center calendar for this month's celebration and join us if you can.

Spring Dance

One of our favorite fund-raising events is the Spring Fling. In addition to dinner and a night of dancing we hold a penny social and raffle to increase the coffers for the evening. The night is inexpensive, offers much fun and is a great time for all.

Changing the Face of Beauty Project

Changing the Face of Beauty - Rhode Island-based non-profit ReFocus is joining a national movement to encourage the use of models with disabilities in advertisements.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and participants in today's photo shoot for prove that sentiment holds true.

The initiative is meant to include models of differing abilities with traditional models, to show that beauty comes in many different forms."

Sister Chris' 45th Anniversary

Chris was celebrated at Rhodes on-the-Pawtuxet by the clients and staff of ReFocus, Inc. The celebration was marked by long-time friend and North Providence City Councilman, Nicholas Narducci, officially proclaiming June 18, 2018 as Founder’s Day. Following the proclamation, fellow ReFocus Administrators spoke of Chris’ history and fulfillment of the three key principles of ReFocus: Love, Trust, & Challenge. A buffet luncheon, dancing, raffles, and a few heart-felt surprises made this an Anniversary that Chris will never forget.
